Catedral de Santana

The Santana Cathedral is an unforgettable landmark of beauty in Barra do Piraí. Built in 1881 by the third Baron of Rio Bonito, the church's foundation stone was laid in the presence of Emperor Dom Pedro II, who visited the region in August 1864. The Baron brought in foreign architects and artists to work on the project, resulting in a fascinating interior. The walls are hand-painted by artists of the Empire, with details reminiscent of curtains and sacred paintings, while the ceiling displays the image of the Immaculate Conception. The gold-leafed high altar houses the ancient image of Our Lady of Santana. The structure preserves original elements, such as the wide-plank flooring and wooden benches. In the sacristy, an oil painting by Victor Meirelles portraying the Baron of Rio Bonito stands out. The temple was officially elevated to the category of cathedral in December 1922.
